Restoring Helvetica seems to have solved the problem.

It was tricky (for me) to get that font back into my user font
library, but eventually I figured it out:

1. In FontBook, select Add Fonts from File menu.
2. In search box for that window, type Helvetica.
3. Select the Helvetica version you want to add.

Just trying to navigate to the Fonts folder in the Library did not
work (the various older Helvetica version were not there). I don't
know where Leopard moved the fonts to, but they showed up fine in the
search box (per the above) as well as in FontBook when looking at "All
Fonts" in the Collection pane.

Anyway, thanks for inspiring me to try to restore Helvetica.
