I have a problem with the clasp on my PowerBook G4. They told me they would have to replace the whole top for about $300. I haven't done it yet because of other funding priorities, but that was what they told me.

I gave my son my MacBookPro [original version] last year for his
birthday and it has developed black spots on the display [2 1" ones
on L side] - we sent it off to Apple via the local Genius. They
warned us it might not be covered but tried = well it isn't because
there is a crack in the monitor and it'll cost $1200 to fix it. I'm
not willing to pay for that.
My recall is that it might be possible to get someone else to repair
it with a new 'top' and it'd cost, but not so much. Any ideas?
Should we just sell it as it is and get some value for it and see
what he wants for graduation? Should we fix it [my view] and if so
how?
The lady is right, it's not under warranty and probably resulted from
a drop that didn't initially crack the monitor but ended up over time
so it is our problem. I'd just like to know the best way to handle
it.
