[DM-MUG] Macs play with PC? (networking)

Can anyone help me work out the kinks?

the mac pro i bought will show the Windows XP Pro machine pc on Apple's network. However it will
not allow me to access it. It asks me for a username and password. I did some research and
according to the sources I have, i have to enter the Windows account username and password. I
tried it and didn't get anywhere.

I have turned on all the necessary file sharing permissions on both Mac and PC. I've tried
alternating ethernet ports, and they both work. I do think it's a gateway IP conflict. 192 vs 168
(self assigned IP address conflict) found in System Prefences >> Network

The PC does not have firewire. It only has ethernet, and 2 usb ports that are both being used by
the keyboard and the mouse.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Also, I'm going to be subtracting an iMac (airport) and then adding a desktop and a laptop which
are both Windows XP platforms. I've networked (hardwired) multiple PCs together before. But I have
never networked any mac with multiple PCs.

The Mac Pro does not come equipped with Airport/wifi features. My PC is not equipped for wi-fi.
the desktop is not equipped with wi-fi.

There are some solutions I'm considering, and would like feedback on.

01 I could hardwire the three desktops to the linksys router I own, and snake a 50 ft ethernet
cable to the second bedroom.

02 I could purchase USB wi-fi adapters and bypass the router and connect 2 out of the 4 machines
wirelessly

03 I could purchase a new dsl modem that is a router and a modem built into one for $90 and
hardwire all desktops to the "Gateway Modem/Router" and snake the 50ft ethernet cable or buy the
USB wi-fi adapters instead of hardwiring it.

Buy the Airport Extreme Base Station, and some USB wi-fi adapters. . .

My internet is currently dsl with the 1.5 MBps. Would the bandwidth be greatly reduced with 4
computers? Enough to need to upgrade to the 5Mbps speed?

Thanks for any help you can give.
