Ive been using MoinMoin Desktop wiki for my personal information
management needs. I'm pretty heavily vested in the wiki paradigm, so
I was attracted to this solution. I've not used any other types of
note taking/information management software, but their descriptions
sound an awful lot like wiki.
Main MoinMoin info site:

MMDE specific page:

I will warn that learning a wiki markup language has a bit of a
learning curve to it, and not every wiki uses the same syntax.
However, most every wiki has an extensive cheat sheet page with good
examples to refer to when you get stuck, and MoinMoin has a GUI editor
built in if you don't need/want to learn the wiki markup.
Setup was easy under OS X. Download, uncompress, launch the program
in a terminal (there are instructions on how to make this into a
double-click launch) and point your Web browser to
http://localhost:8080.
Best of all, it is free and cross-platform. You could easily migrate
your personal wiki between Mac, Linux, Windows and other systems. I
keep a copy on both my MBP and my Ubuntu laptops. I take care to make
changes on only one at a time and keep them in sync.
