[DM-MUG] scanning slides

He says he's mounted them in the scanner in the appropriate magazine
and the scanner specs include one for 35mm.

THere is usually a media type to select in the "driver" dialog when
starting the scan operation - if you don't tell the software to use
the slide mechanism it won't turn on the backlight - slides have to
have a backlight in order to be seen as anything but black squares.
It's been a while for me, but I have a Cannon (USB2 8xxx series) that
does slides fine, but I know I had to use the slide setting in the
dialog that initiates the scan - also, make sure that any cables
between the lid and the main unit are plugged in - not at home to
look at mine ATM.
