[DM-MUG] old apple computer start up problem

Can you help?  When I start my 1996 Apple, I  get a disc with a happy face 
first then it turns into a disk with a 0 at the top  and a flashing question 
mark in the lower section.  I want to use this old  computer again because it has 
my recipes I have used in past years on it.   Now I have the time to use some 
of them and I can't get to them. I use to know  how to do the start up in a 
different way to correct that, but I can't find my  owner's manual either.  I 
cant seem to find the name of it either...seems  it was the newer version right 
after the G3. Please help if you can.
