from a discussion on MacLaw in April == [I bought MBP original and it
was hot until I did the firmware change and gave it to my son....I
now have the MBPCore2Duo and notice it is MUCH cooler]

I'm late to this thread, but Apple's been replacing early MacBook
Pros that have had a tendency to over heat. If that's a possibility,
you could take yours into the Apple Store genius bar at

Back on this subject, there's a firmware update (doesn't show up in
Software Update for some reason) that some claim helps with heat
problems. I've applied it and can't tell if it does.

It's at:

I haven't tried the battery trick yet, but I've tried resetting the
PMU based on some Macintouch forum recommendations. It feels
subjectively cooler, but maybe I'm not hitting the CPU cores as hard
since I've done it.

I should have thought to test the CPU heat with software before
trying this, so I could report something more objective. Anyway, to
reset the PMU on the MBP:

1. Shutdown.
2. Unplug.
3. Remove battery.
4. Press and hold the power button for five seconds.

That's it. The areas above the speaker grills aren't quite so hot
now, though the strip above the function keys will still warm my
fingers in the winter.
