[DM-MUG] How do I tell what's running on my computer if I can't see it?

Dear Friends,

I am so appreciative that you MUGgles are here. I¹m known for my
problem-solving ability in other areas of life but on a computer, this
grandma is so slow I¹m not even allowed on the expressway. I have been
trying to figure out how to download movies on my MacBook Pro from file
sharing and what I get is porn sites and stuff that¹s probably illegal and
which I¹ve been entirely unsuccessful in getting to work, plus now I think
there is something running on my computer that I can¹t find. Even when there
is nothing else running, I can hear that humming sound that says something
is working in there.

This is actually a two part question, which I¹ll break up into two posts.
The question on this one is, how do I find out what¹s running on my computer
and/or get rid of it?
