Well, NiceCast is not the same as Skype or iChat. It is 1 way - for  
broadcasting, not for 2 way communication, but for getting things out  
to a virtual audience it's better suited in some ways, though it can  
also be used in combination with the aforementioned services. Also,  
NiceCast is not free ($40), but it does it's job well.

Another VOIP service/program is "Gizmo" which uses more open  
standards than Skype, and I believe google talk started offering some  
media options. Second Life is now in the beta phases of adding voice  
chat to it's 3D world platform, so people can have a virtual presence  
as well as a voice.
