[DM-MUG] The mystery of the disappearing bookmarks

I was using Safari today and early afternoon I looked up and the 
Bookmarks were gone [both on bar and in menu].  History was still 
there...I tried to use BackUp restore and also another back up copy, 
but nothing there either.  Went to .Mac Sync and nothing there [it's 
not checked to sync although I do allegedly sync it on my computers = 
I don't know what that means].

This has never happened before and I, luckily, had a several days old 
bookmark html file that I had saved, so just imported it.

But can anyone tell me why Safari Bookmarks would just disappear like 
that in the midst of the day?  The only thing I did today was: 
install iTunes 7 [I dont' recall whether I noticed the problem before 
or after] and I did have to restart...but it's odd that there would 
still be a History list [long] in the Safari but no Bookmarks all of 
a sudden.

Any ideas so I can protect myself other than just backing up.
