No, it's something new, I just bought a box today. It looks like the  
text below the icon is descriptive. It also appears that the icon  
only denotes a write-able disc nowadays and the actual capability of  
the media is written in tiny text below the icon.

I also have 8x imation DVD-R discs with the icon. Another odd note:  
the Verbatim DVD+R DL discs are listed as 2.4x on the box with an  
added blurb, "Up to 8x speed with compatible... drives." Are you  
clear yet? It just makes shopping so much fun!
