[DM-MUG] why will restore from backup not complete?

Ray,

It sounds like your hard drive is/or is about to fail.  It can't
successfully write to part of your hard drive.  You can try running disk
utility and have it zero out the drive .  This takes hours to complete
usually but if it hangs or crashes trying to do that then you know that the
drive is failed.
