There seemed to be some interest in what I dubbed as a "regional OSS development project". The idea is simply that while most OSS projects are developed by people geographically dispersed, that a group of regional developers could collaborate more effectively with in-person meetings, phone/skype conference calls in tandem with VNC, etc. Specifically I am contributing to a few projects whose aim it is to provide an PHP application scaffold. Notice I didn't say framework. Like CMS implementations, the framework problem has been licked many times over. What I'm working on is a system that allow developers to stand up a scaffolded PHP application and being coding business rules instead of spending a bunch of time assembling libraries, etc to make it all work.
This seemed to generate some interest by a few people some of which who are genuinely interested in the concept of scaffold applications and by others who are interested in learning more about more advanced coding techniques like the use of a Model-View-Controller implementation or how to use Propel, etc.
If you are interested in this sort of thing please contact me off list so I can gauge the level of interest. If you aren't sure if you are interested just know you don't need a tremendous amount of time. Tasks can be split out into a number of ways to make best use of the amount of time you can afford. Besides, it is all really about learning.
Based on the feedback I receive I'll try to contact those are interested to set up a time for a first working session. The working session would be hands on so bring a laptop (if you have one) and for those who don't I'm sure we can pair up and get you some valuable keyboard time.
