I'm not sure on Ubuntu, but on OpenSuSE 11.x I have to use pm-hibernate and pm-suspend to perform those actions from a virtual console. If I stay on the graphical console when suspending/hibernating, the display doesn't come back to life. I've not investigated further, but I suspect it is the Nvidia driver.<br clear="all">
