</div>If you can install to a "USB thumb drive" you can install to a the hard drive -- they're both just random-access block devices.<br>

</blockquote></div><br clear="all">Ubuntu (probably others) can create a "live cd" on a usb thumb drive. They've traditionally been a read-only install, just like the CD. However recent versions allow the optional creation of a rw filesystem if the drive is large enough. You don't need to do that though.<div>
