When I try and run a video from it over the network I get a ton of errors in dmesg (see below). switch to another drive (same drive model, controller, etc) and no problems.<br>

use "sysvconfig --disable <service name>" to disable something. I'd not<br>
be surprised if Ubuntu uses the same command.<br>
