My computer has an ir "eye" plugged into the main board headder. the uart mode is set to irda, and it does not show as a serial port in linux. I had to use the lirc_dev and lirc_it87 modules to get it to work in lirc. Are you trying to set this up on a laptop?

Out of curiosity, are you using the SIR for IrDA or does your computer
have a regular IR port on it? I'd love to get IR support so that I can
use a remote for presenting without having a usb dongle.
