I have a UPS that has features like what's described. Since I need an antenna to pull HD signals in, I have a powered indoor antenna. I plugged it into an outlet that is controlled by a master. I also plugged in the DVD player to a master controlled outlet. I then plug the TV into the master outlet. This way, the antenna isn't on all the time, unless the TV is on. And who just listens to DVDs? But, there are other outlets that are not master controlled. So I plug my Tivo, VCR with a clock, DVD recorder with a clock, and my stereo into outlets not controlled by the master. It works well, especially when my step-son turns off the TV but forgets to turn off the DVD player.
So if you shut off the TV the cable box goes off. Great idea.
So if you shut off the TV the VCR / TIVO goes off. Great idea. Yeah,
Right!
NY Times article about "vampire electronics". Home electronics that
suck power even when they're off. The Energy Department guesses that
25 percent of the power the average piece of electronics consumes is
consumed while turned off.

The beef of the article is to shill for the APC Power-Saving
SurgeArrest surge protector. It's a nifty idea: the you plug your
computer into a "master" plug-in, and then your printer and monitor
and speakers and all those other gadgets into slave outlets. When
whatever is plugged into the master outlet stops drawing power the
strip cuts power to the slave outlets. So, when you turn your
computer off all your other stuff gets turned off too.

I leave my computer on all the time, normally, but I've been trying to
turn it off when I go to work. 500W all day long can get to be a
serious energy bill.
