I'm still not quite sure why I'm getting these problems but I appreciate your suggestions for tracking them down. I did boot from a different image and that seems to help. But the main problem seems to be with .....<BR>

<FONT COLOR="#000000">What does dmesg say? Is there anything consistent</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#000000">that causes the lockup? Your comment about restoring a corrupted kernel: do</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#000000">you mean how to restore a functional kernel? If so, what bootloader are you</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#000000">using, and why might the current kernel be corrupt? Did you recompile?</FONT>
