The other option would be to wrap the rdp in ssh via port forwarding. Or the option that hasn’t come up yet is No Machine’s NX     protocol. (With the disclaimer that it is not free (no cost for personal use, but not libre)

Given the security history of RDP I'm not sure that I want that. PiKVM
seems like the best option for small deployments if you can get them,
especially since the software is open. Bonus with PiKVM vs RDP is that you
can access BIOS screens, trigger a reset, etc.
