GitHub was burning cash like no other. They hadn't had a CEO in almost a
year. I'm guessing they were at a point where they were looking for an
exit, and it was either this or IPO'ing on the public markets (which also
doesn't sound like it'd end well.)

Microsoft is one of the few companies that can leverage and defend this
acquisition; they are already (I believe) the #1 source of contributors to
GitHub.

They've also talked about open-sourcing Windows, for what it's worth.
