I am guilty of assuming we were talking about a Linux machine. This
being a Linux mailing list, i don't think my assumption unreasonable,
but reasonable or not, it seems it was incorrect.

Most operating systems will have a number of updates to their kernel in
a given ~500 day span. Of the systems that i have direct experience, the
only one which might not have a security update to the kernel.
(Actually, i just checked the OpenBSD security page, and it has been a
few years since there was a security update that affected the kernel.)
But OpenBSD releases are only supported for about 1 year, which would
imply that if it were OpenBSD, that it is no longer being maintained and
might have unpatched security vulnerabilities.

If you are running something even more esoteric than OpenBSD, then i'd
be quite curious to find out what it is, though if you do not want to
say in a public list after telling us how long it has gone since a
kernel update, i'd certainly understand.
