Homespun, but easy to use -- either with OWFS or as straight-up serial commands -- and once you buy an interface board to convert 1-wire to standard RS-232 (~$20) sensors are typically single-digit dollars, even in small quantities. Arduino can be used as such an interface but it's probably overkill unless you're trying to add an Ethernet interface or build some sort of stand-alone processing system.

There are a bunch of sensors and output devices available for 1-wire, and they're all pretty cheap, available in human-solderable packages, can be easily weatherproofed, etc. If you build a 1-wire network it can easily become your go-to solution for real-world interfaces; it certainly did for me.
