I never used the hdparam -Z option, I used hdparm -S 0 to turn off the sleep mode. See if that option works at all. I thought newer Linux versions have a script which executes upon attaching a USB drive which disabled the sleep mode. Might want to investigate this feature and if it is in Fedora Core 9 johnl
