Well it sounds like you settled for Synaptic.  Smart choice.  But for
the future:

When you download files directly from the developer's website, they
always have instructions for how to install it, and many times the
instructions will be tailored to your distro (Ubuntu, in your case).
It usually boils down to 'configure', 'make', and 'make install'.
